The Oakland Athletics' 1988 season involved the A's winning their first American League West title since 1981, with a record of 104 wins and 58 losses. In 1988, the elephant was restored as the symbol of the Athletics and currently adorns the left sleeve of home and road uniforms. The elephant was retired as team mascot in 1963 by then-owner Charles O. Finley in favor of a Missouri mule. The A's defeated the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS, but lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games, including a dramatic, classic walk-off home run by the Dodgers' Kirk Gibson in game one.1988 was the first of 3 straight years the A's would represent the AL in the World Series

This size 12, 10k gold ring weighs 32 grams. It was presented to the A’s longtime clubhouse and equipment manager, Frank Cienzczyk, when the team was crowned Champions of the AL in 1988. The top panel reads “OAKLAND 1988 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS” surrounding a diamond-encrusted A’s logo atop a green synthetic stone. The logo is made up of silver and 12 round-cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.3-carats. The left panel reads “CIENSCZYK” in relief above the casted image of the team’s Elephant logo and banners that read “AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPS”. The right panel features the Athletics script logo in relief above the casted image of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, the ALCS record “A’s 4 Red Sox 0” and a banner that reads “2,287,335”, the team’s attendance for the 1988 season. The ‘88 Athletics were the first team to cross the two-million fan mark for home attendance. The inside of the ring is stamped “10K©JOSTENS”. The ring is in MINT condition. This is the exact same ring that the players and coaches received.
