On August 26, 1947, Dan Bankhead became the first African American pitcher, in Major League Baseball. After a strong career in the Negro League playing for the Memphis Red Sox, he was signed at age 24 by Branch Rickey to play in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system.

This 6 7/8” x 7 ¼” original photo taken by legendary sports photographer William C. Greene, who is best known for shooting the Yankees and Dodgers for the New York World-Telegram and Associated Press derived from the Sporting News Archives, shows Jackie Robinson and Dan Bankhead in the locker room from Bankhead’s MLB debut.  Jackie is shown gifting Bankhead a pair of his spikes.
