Lambeau looks over the list of college stars on the national pro league draft with Bo Modenda, a NY Giants asst coach. Molenda had played college ball at Michigan and played in the NFL with the NY Yankees and the Packers. He would later become an asst coach under Lambeau in the late 40’s with the Pack. The draft was held on the eve of the Giants/Packers championship game.
Earl Louis “Curly” Lambeau (d 1965) was founder, player, and first coach of the Green Bay Packers professional American football team. He shares the distinction with rival George Halas of the Chicago Bears of coaching his team to the most NFL championships, with six. Lambeau also coached the Arizona Cardinals (Chicago Cardinals at the time) in 1950 and 1951 and the Washington Redskins in 1952 and 1953.
This glossy AP photo (10.75 x 8 inches) is in very good condition with some very minor flaws common to nearly all working press photos from the time, including some very light surface wrinkles, unevenly cut borders, and some editorial markings on the front. A printed caption on the front is dated Dec 9, 1939. There’s a date stamp on the back from “DEC 19 1939.” From the Seattle Times Archives. Nice shot showing the huge draft board list! You can see Lambeau pointing to the name Prasse out of Iowa. Prasse was co-caption at the U of Iowa with Nile Kinnick. Prasse played 3 years in the NBL for the Oshkosh All-Stars. He was shot and injured during WW II, thus prematurely ending his professional athletic career.
