Chris “Red” Cagle was a star halfback at Army and a three time All American who scored 169 points and became one of the sport’s first national celebrities, appearing on the cover of Time Magazine in 1929.
He played five NFL seasons from 1930 to 1934, starring for the New York Giants, where he earned one of the league’s highest salaries in 1932. He later became a player and co-owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers franchise before retiring. Cagle served as a cadet at West Point and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. His life ended tragically in at age 37 when he supposed fell down a flight of stairs at the Fulton Street station of the New York City Subway on December 23, 1942 (he died 3 days later from a fractured skull).
Offered is an original Associated Press TYPE I Photo that measures 6” x 8” in size. Original paper caption attached on the back. Stamped on back from 1930 through 1942 (when he had his tragic accident). Original newspaper editorial crop marks on the front of the photo.
