Louis Alterie (1886–1935), born Leland Varain, was a flamboyant Chicago bootlegger and labor racketeer with deep ties to Dion O'Banion's North Side Gang. A genuine Colorado cowboy turned gangster, he was known for his wild temperament and love of theatrics — famously challenging his friend O'Banion's killers to a street duel after the 1924 murder. He ran the Chicago Theatrical Janitors Union as a shakedown operation and maintained ranching interests in Colorado. Long considered an embarrassment by mob leadership for his recklessness, he was finally gunned down in Chicago in 1935.

Offered is an original press Photo that measures 5” x 7” in size.  Original paper caption glued over stamp on the back reads:

SOUGHT FOR QUESTIONING IN BOETTCHER KIDNAPPING.
Denver police have asked Chicago authorities to question Louis (Two-Gun) Alterie, former Chicago gangster and now retired Arizona dude rancher, about the kidnapping at Denver, Colo., Feb. 12, of Charles Boettcher, 31-year-old capitalist. Alterie (shown above) left Denver Feb. 1st. He was banned from the state after a shooting affray in Glenwood Springs, Colo.
