One of the finest surviving images from the golden age of the Negro Leagues, this original 1946 United Press Type I photograph captures Newark Eagles teammates Monte Irvin and Larry Doby during the club's championship season. Both New Jersey natives, Irvin and Doby starred for the Eagles as they captured the Negro National League pennant and defeated the Kansas City Monarchs to win the 1946 Negro World Series, the only championship in franchise history.

The photograph was taken just before baseball's integration transformed the sport forever. At just 23 years old, Doby became the first Black player in American League history when he debuted with the Cleveland Indians on July 5, 1947, only 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color barrier. Irvin followed with the New York Giants on July 8, 1949, becoming one of the National League's premier stars and helping lead the Giants to the 1951 pennant. Both men were later enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Irvin in 1973 and Doby in 1998.

Offered is an original 7" x 9" United Press Type I photograph, PSA/DNA encapsulated, depicting two future Hall of Famers at the height of the Negro Leagues, just before they helped reshape Major League Baseball. A museum-quality image documenting two pioneering legends and one of the most significant transitions in baseball history.

Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
