The 1957 Hollywood Stars played their final season in the Pacific Coast League, finishing 94–74 and placing third. A unique franchise backed by Hollywood figures such as Bob Cobb and Bing Crosby, the Stars were longtime rivals of the Los Angeles Angels and fan favorites at Gilmore Field. Their run ended when Gilmore Field was sold in 1957 and the impending arrival of the Dodgers made PCL baseball unsustainable in Los Angeles. The Stars played their last game on September 5, 1957, then relocated to Salt Lake City in 1958, becoming the Salt Lake City Bees.
Offered is a rare Wilson Official California League Baseball signed by 16 members of the team. This was most likely signed during a game vs the Los Angeles Angels (who were part of the California League). The two teams typically met 20-24 times per season under the PCL’s balanced schedule format of the era. Slightly toned creamy colored baseball with signatures that we’d rate 8-9/10.
Many former and future Major League ballplayers were on the roster. Autographs include (all listed below had Major League Service):
Jim Baumer
Carlos Bernier
Chuck Churn
Bennie Daniels
Joe Durham (Negro Leagues, Orioles, Cardinals)
John Fitzpatrick (coach) – never played MLB, but was a coach in the Big Leagues with the Pirates (1953-55) and Braves (1958-59)
Bob Garber
Bill Hall
Spook Jacobs
Clyde King (manager)
Pete Naton
Paul Pettit
