Miles Davis (1926-1991) was one of the most influential musicians in jazz history. A virtuoso trumpeter and innovative bandleader, he helped pioneer bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. His landmark albums include Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, and Bitches Brew. Davis mentored legends including John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter.
Provenance: From the Frank Driggs Collection, one of the most important private archives of jazz photography ever assembled. Driggs (1930-2011), a noted jazz historian, Columbia Records producer, and archivist, spent more than 60 years preserving over 100,000 jazz photographs and memorabilia. His collection became a cornerstone resource for books, exhibitions, and Ken Burns' Jazz before being acquired by Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2013.
Offered is an original 10" x 8" photograph of Miles Davis in New York City, 1957. The image dates from one of the most significant years of Davis' career, when he was leading his first great quintet featuring John Coltrane while recording the landmark album Miles Ahead with Gil Evans. Captured during this pivotal period, the portrait shows Davis as he emerged as the leading voice of modern jazz.
Rare original portrait, encapsulated and certified as a TYPE I Original Photograph by PSA/DNA.
