Meyer Lansky was known as the "Mob's Accountant" and was an American organized crime figure of Polish birth who, along with his associate Charles "Lucky" Luciano, was instrumental in the development of the National Crime Syndicate in the United States.
Associated with the Jewish mob, Lansky developed a gambling empire that stretched around the world. He was said to own points (percentages) in casinos in Las Vegas, Cuba, The Bahamas, and London.
Although a member of the Jewish mob, Lansky undoubtedly had strong influence with the Italian-American Mafia and played a large role in the consolidation of the criminal underworld. The full extent of this role has been the subject of some debate, as Lansky himself denied many of the accusations against him.
Fearing prosecution for various offenses, in 1970 Lansky attempted to retire and immigrate to Israel, aiming to use the country's Law of Return, which grants citizenship to anyone of Jewish heritage. After two years, his attempt for permanent residency was rejected due to his criminal record, and he was deported to the United States.
Offered is a 10” x 8” original TYPE I photo of Lansky stepping out after giving a deposition in June 1982. Stamped on back by the Miami Herald where this photo was used. Original period Kodak paper.
Note – 3rd image enhanced for you to view the period Kodak markings.
