Chet Baker (1929-1988) was one of jazz's greatest trumpeters and among the defining voices of cool jazz. His lyrical, understated style, often compared to Miles Davis, influenced generations of musicians, while his haunting vocals on albums like Chet Baker Sings made him a crossover star. A heroin addiction led to arrests, declining health, and the loss of his front teeth, forcing him to relearn the trumpet before staging a remarkable comeback in the 1970s. His turbulent life ended with a fatal fall from an Amsterdam hotel in 1988, cementing his status as jazz's most tragic romantic figure.
Bruce Weber (born 1946) is an acclaimed American photographer and filmmaker best known for his timeless black and white fashion and portrait photography. He created iconic campaigns for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, and Vogue, and directed the Oscar nominated documentary Let's Get Lost (1988), the definitive film on jazz legend Chet Baker. Weber's cinematic style has influenced generations of photographers.
Bruce Weber photographed Chet Baker in 1987 for what became the acclaimed documentary Let's Get Lost. Shot in striking black and white, the sessions captured Baker's weathered appearance alongside the lyrical beauty of his trumpet playing, creating one of jazz's most iconic visual portraits. Originally intended as a brief photo project, it evolved into a feature-length film documenting Baker's remarkable talent, personal struggles, and final years. The film was released shortly after Baker's death in 1988.
Offered is an original 8” x 10” photograph of Chet Baker taken by Bruce Weber for his original photo shoot. The photo features Weber’s stamp on the back. Very few of these original photos (meaning photos produced from the original negative and printed at the time) have ever surfaced.
Later prints show up from time to time (as well as other photos that you see out there on the market of Chet). We believe this is due to the very transient life that Baker led.
This photo is of Art Gallery quality and a true rarity!!!!
Encapsulated and certified as a TYPE I Original Photograph by PSA/DNA.
