Samuel Harold “Sam” Lacy (1903–2003) was a pioneering African American sportswriter for the Baltimore Afro-American whose career spanned more than 70 years. A relentless advocate for integration, he pressed Major League Baseball owners to sign Black players and documented the achievements of Negro League stars. Lacy covered Jackie Robinson’s 1947 rookie season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, reporting on Robinson’s performance and the racism he endured while also facing segregation himself in press facilities. In 1988, Lacy was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame after receiving the J. G. Taylor Spink Award, honoring his lasting impact on the game and sports journalism.
