Cal Abrams was one of the few Jewish players in Major League Baseball during his era. An outfielder, he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles from 1949 to 1956. Abrams batted .269 during his career and was a member of the 1949 National League champion Dodgers, earning recognition as one of the notable Jewish ballplayers of the postwar era.
Branch Rickey (D. 1965) was an innovative Major League Baseball (MLB) executive elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967. He was perhaps best known for breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier by signing African American player Jackie Robinson, for drafting the first Afro-Hispanic superstar, Roberto Clemente, for creating the framework for the modern minor league farm system, for encouraging the Major Leagues to add new teams through his involvement in the proposed Continental League, and for introducing the batting helmet.
Offered is Cal Abrams’ Official Contract transfer to the Mobile Bears of the Southern Association (AA team for the Dodgers) from the Brooklyn Dodgers (one year before his MLB debut call up). Document Dated April 14, 1948 (measures 6” x 4”) signed by Branch Rickey in black steel tipped fountain pen.
