Burleigh "Ol' Stubblebeard" Grimes was a right-handed spitballer who pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Brooklyn Robins, New York Giants, Boston Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and New York Yankees across a 19-season career from 1916 to 1934. When the spitball was banned in 1920, Grimes was one of just 17 established pitchers grandfathered in, and he made the most of it, leading all pitchers in wins during the 1920s with 190. He twice led the NL in wins and posted a 25-14 record in 1928 with Pittsburgh. Grimes appeared in four World Series, earning his championship ring with the 1931 Cardinals after pitching 8-plus innings in a decisive Game 7 despite a dislocated vertebra. He finished with 270 career wins and a 3.53 ERA, earning Hall of Fame induction in 1964.
