Sometimes, one play in a big game gets burned into the collective memory, the kind of moment fans chew over for decades. That's exactly what happened in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series-St. Louis Cardinals against the Boston Red Sox. The game was tied at 3, and Boston's Leon Culberson, a backup outfielder, was filling in at center for the injured Dom DiMaggio.Enos Slaughter, a future Hall of Famer, led off the inning with a single. Two outs later, he was still parked on first when Harry Walker came to bat. St. Louis called a hit-and-run on a 2-1 count. Slaughter took off, and Walker roped a liner to center. Now, here's where it gets interesting. Slaughter hit third base like a freight train with no brakes, flat-out ignoring the stop sign from his third-base coach. Meanwhile, Boston's shortstop, Johnny Pesky, had the ball in hand and plenty of time. But whether it was shock, hesitation, or just plain nerves, Pesky froze for a moment-long enough to make a weak throw home. Slaughter slid across the plate, safe, scoring the eventual game-winner.Slaughter's "mad dash" wasn't just gutsy; it was legendary. And in St. Louis, they still talk about it like it happened yesterday, a play etched forever in the lore of Cardinals baseball.Offered is an original 7" x 9" original Wide World Photos from the Sport Magazine archives that has the original paper caption on the back of one of the most historic events in World Series history. We've never seen another original photograph from this event ever offered for sale.Encapsulated as a TYPE I original photograph by PSA/DNA
