Freddie Steinmark (1949-1971) was an undersized safety who helped the University of Texas win the 1969 national championship. After playing in the famous "Game of the Century" against Arkansas on December 6, 1969, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. His leg was amputated just days later, yet he watched from the sidelines 20 days after surgery as his team won the Cotton Bowl. His story was adapted into the 2015 film "My All American," starring Finn Wittrock and Aaron Eckhart.
James Street (1948-2013) was Texas's quarterback who posted a perfect 20-0 record as a starter, leading the Longhorns to that same 1969 championship. In the Arkansas game, he threw the crucial fourth-down pass that set up the winning touchdown. Street was also a two-time All-American baseball pitcher who threw the only perfect game in UT history. His son Juston portrayed him in "My All American."
Offered is a super rare original TYPE I photo (8”x10” in size) taken by Sam C. Pierson Jr. of the Houston Chronicle of Steinmark and Street on the sideline at the 1970 Cotton Bowl. Photographer and Chronicle stamp on back. Touching photo that was the climax of the Freddie Steinmark biopic mentioned above.
