Howard Porter Signed GPC Bulls Knicks 1971 Final Four MVP Tragic Death

Howard Porter was a three-time All-American at Villanova who led the Wildcats to the 1971 NCAA championship game against UCLA. He scored 25 points in the final and was named the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, although the honor was later vacated because he had signed a professional contract during his senior season. Porter played seven NBA seasons with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets, averaging a career-best 13.2 points for Detroit in 1976-77.

Porter’s life ended tragically in 2007. He disappeared on May 18 and was discovered severely beaten in a Minneapolis alley the following morning. He remained hospitalized for a week before dying from his injuries on May 26 at age 58. Authorities determined that Porter had been lured into a robbery setup and brutally attacked. Rashad Arthur Raleigh was later charged with his murder and received a life sentence.
