Mustache Day – June 18, 1972, Oakland A’s vs Cleveland Indians

On June 18, 1972, the Oakland A’s held Major League Baseball’s first “Mustache Day,” created by owner Charlie Finley. He offered a $300 bonus to every player who grew a mustache by Father’s Day, breaking baseball’s long tradition of clean-shaven grooming. Fans with mustaches were admitted free at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

Every player on the A’s roster participated and the team became known as The Mustache Gang. The promotion helped define the A’s identity during the early 1970s and coincided with their rise as a championship powerhouse and a cultural shift in baseball clubhouse style.

Result: The Oakland A’s defeated the Cleveland Indians 9-0 in front of 26,210 fans at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium.  Vida Blue got his first win of the season and Milt Wilcox of Cleveland took the loss.
