Max Carey (1890–1976) was a Baseball Hall of Fame outfielder renowned for his speed, defensive brilliance, and baserunning skill. A 10-time NL stolen base champion and longtime Pittsburgh Pirates star, he retired with 738 steals—then the National League record.
Carey played a major role in women’s professional baseball as president of the AAGPBL from 1945–1950. Under his leadership, the league expanded, refined its rules, and increased player development. Carey helped modernize play toward a more traditional baseball style and strengthened the league’s visibility during its peak postwar years, making him one of the most influential executives in AAGPBL history.
Gloria Dougal was an infielder in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, playing during the 1947 season. A native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, she joined the Kenosha Comets, appearing in a limited number of games as a utility player. While her professional career was brief, Dougal is recognized as part of the pioneering generation of women who expanded opportunities in postwar professional baseball. She is also included in the AAGPBL’s permanent exhibit at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, honoring all league participants.
Offered is a super duper rare, typed letter signed (in green steel tipped pen) as President of the All-American Girls Base Ball League dated June 2, 1949 to Gloria Dougal.
He writes, “Dear Gloria:
Your telegram was received. Sorry that we have been unable to complete our rosters the way we started out.
Just talked with Lennie Zintak and he seems to think quite a lot of your ability. The trouble so far has been that players have been returned from the league in the last few days and we have been unable to make decisions on all of them.
My suggestion would be to keep yourself available as there are always check-outs and things happen that make new players necessary. Mr. Zintak said he would contact you immediately when an opportunity occurs.
Very sincerely,
ALL-AMERICAN GIRLS BASEBALL LEAGUE
(signed) Max Carey
President”
Letter has been cut down to be taped into a scrapbook (it has been since removed) to 8.5” x 8” in size. Historic document related to the most instrumental all-women’s baseball league in history!
