Patrick Jay Toomay(born May 17, 1948 inPomona, California) was anAmerican footballdefensive endwho played 10 years in theNational Football Leaguefor four different teams: theDallas Cowboys, theBuffalo Bills, theTampa Bay Buccaneers, and theOakland Raiders. He playedcollege footballforVanderbilt Universityand was drafted in the sixth round of the1970 NFL Draftby theDallas Cowboys. He is the author of books about professionalfootball, including:The Crunchand the novelOn Any Given SundayHe was drafted in the sixth round of the1970 NFL Draftby theDallas Cowboys. At the beginning of his career he was undersized for adefensive end, so he was used mostly in substitution situations.In1972with the imminent retirement ofGeorge Andrie, he became the team's starter at rightdefensive end.TheNFLdidn't start recognizingquarterback sacksas an official stat until1982; however, the Cowboys have their own records, dating back before the1982 season. According to the Cowboys' stats, Toomay is unofficially credited for leading the team insacksin1973with a total of 10.5.Toomay was considered a character and an intellectual during his time with the team. He was a member of the "Zero Club" which prided itself on performing behind the scenes. Their first rule, "Thou Shalt Not Seek Publicity", kept their members (Toomay,Blaine NyeandLarry Cole) out of the limelight.In1974although he remained a starter, he shared playing time withEd "Too Tall" Jones, who was theNFL's number 1 overall draft choice. That year he was used mainly on running downs.In1975the Cowboys traded him to theBuffalo Billsin exchange for a second round draft choice in1977, that was eventually used in a deal package to draftTony Dorsett. During his five seasons with the team, he was a productive and durable player (never missing a game) and was a part of twoSuper Bowls, including winningSuper Bowl VI.The Oakland Raiders credited him with a team leading 17 sacks in1977. In1978he was credited with 5 sacks after seeing little playing time. Often used in obvious passing situations, he was known by fans as "Third down Pat". He was released the next year, after having problems with his knee.Toomay published a series of books, including the novel, "On Any Given Sunday". He also played the part of an assistant coach toY.A. Tittlein theOliver Stonefilm, "Any Given Sunday".
