Keith Hernandez was one of baseball's greatest first basemen and a cornerstone of the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets. A career .296 hitter, Hernandez won the 1979 National League MVP Award (shared with Willie Stargell), captured 11 consecutive Gold Gloves at first base, helped lead St. Louis to the 1982 World Series championship, and became the leader of the Mets' resurgence that culminated in the 1986 World Series title. Widely regarded as one of the finest defensive first basemen in baseball history, he was a five-time All-Star and one of the game's most complete players.
Today, many baseball historians and sabermetric analysts believe Hernandez was significantly underrated and view him as one of the strongest Hall of Fame candidates not currently in Cooperstown.
