The 1987 San Francisco 49ers finished an NFL-best 13-2, winning the NFC West under Bill Walsh. The season was disrupted by a 24-day NFL players’ strike, which resulted in one week of games being canceled and three weeks being played largely with replacement players. Joe Montana led the league with 31 touchdown passes, while Jerry Rice produced a remarkable 22 touchdown catches in just 12 games. San Francisco led the NFL with 459 points and featured one of the league’s best defenses. Despite entering the playoffs as the NFC’s top seed and a Super Bowl favorite, the season ended in a stunning 36-24 divisional playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
