Robert Pershing Wadlow (D. 1940 at age 22), also known as the Alton Giant and the Giant of Illinois, was an American man who was the tallest person in recorded history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. Wadlow's height was 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) while his weight reached 439 lb (199 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hypertrophy of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone (HGH).Offered is an original 7" x 9" original TYPE I photo (original ACME photo stamp on back) dated April 5, 1937 with the original paper caption attached that reads, "Robert Wadlow, young Alton, Illinois, man who will appear with a well known circus, pictured as he arrived in New York from Chicago, April 5th, aboard a TWA plane. The youth, who stands 8 feet 7 inches, and who weighs 450 pounds, was pictured at the Newark airport bidding his stewardess, Miss Gladys Entrekin, good bye after the flight. His chair had to be especially reenforced to insure correct distribution of his weight."
